The legacy of a local, independent pharmacy continues for nearly a century with Moon's Pharmacy. Visit us and experience good ole down-home service.
Moon’s Pharmacy had its origin in a rented downtown storefront originally My Drug Store dating back to the 1920s. Marion Holmes then bought the pharmacy and became known as Holmes Drug Store in the early 1940s. George Wright later bought and changed the name to Wright’s Drug Store #2 in the mid 1940s. Potions, lotions, and compounds were sold there as conjured by local physicians. The store was purchased in 1952 and became Rainer’s Pharmacy, named after the new owner, Joel Rainer.
Around 1962, Morgan Moon began his pharmacy career as the business’ delivery boy. He worked at the pharmacy throughout high school, junior college, and his tenure at the University of Georgia, when he graduated with a pharmacy degree in 1968. Moon returned to Tifton, married Cynthia Kennedy in 1969, initiated his professional career, and in 1970 purchased half of the business of Rainer’s Pharmacy. The Moons had four children born between 1970 and 1980. During this time, they and the Rainers deepened their practice of service to the community; the business thrived and the families were integral in the life of Tifton and its surrounding areas.
When Rainer retired in 1985, Morgan and Cynthia Moon purchased the remainder of the business. Following Rainer’s death in 1990, the business’ name was properly changed to Moon’s Pharmacy. By that time, the business volume had grown larger than the downtown storefront could accommodate. A new freestanding facility was built, housing state-of-the-art technology and offering greater accessibility to both new and long-standing customers. In the subsequent three years, business revenues tripled. The Moon children, like the Rainer children a generation before, all spent time or worked in the pharmacy. Now as adults, they continue to speak respectfully of the work ethic and integrity learned from their fathers, and of the time management, customer service and interpersonal skills acquired from working alongside their parents.
In 2000, Moon’s added another pharmacy, Moon’s Pharmacy LTC, within their existing building to serve the aging community as assisted living facilities were built in the region. In 2003, the pharmacy began offering vaccines, including flu, pneumonia, shingles and travel immunizations to its customers. In 2005, a robotic dispensing system was added that dispenses the top 175 fastest-moving medications, allowing pharmacists additional consulting time while also saving technician labor costs. By 2007, Moon’s was the largest and only full service independent pharmacy to offer compounding services for a population of over 64,425 in Tifton and surrounding cities.
At Morgan Moon's untimely death from cancer, ownership of the business passed to his widow, Cynthia, and his surviving three children. Today, Moon’s Pharmacy continues to thrive. Cynthia Moon retains primary ownership and manages the business and operations of the pharmacy. Floyd works full-time as Pharmacy Director, Catherine also serves as pharmacist, and Claire works behind the scenes with marketing and design projects.
Moon’s Pharmacy is synonymous with Tifton. The two are inseparable. The business is poised to continue into its fourth generation, enhancing the quality of life for its community residents. Moon’s Pharmacy, while a well-run business, is more than that: It is a vital cog in the wheel of the community’s life.
